Chandrayaan 2, India’s Mission To The Moon
(By a Staff Reporter)
Sriharikota, 7 Sept, 2019: India has successfully launched the Chandrayaan 2 Mission on 22nd July, 2019 to explore the moon for getting more information after its first successful mission in 2009. Chandrayaan 2 is the second lunar exploration mission developed by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) after Chandrayaan 1.
The mission consisted of lunar orbiter, the Vikram lander and the Pragyan lunar rover which were developed in India. It is the follow up mission from the Chandrayaan 1 with the main scientific objectives to map and study the lunar surface composition, as well as the location and the presence of lunar water.
Chandrayaan 2 was launched to the moon from the second launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Center on July 22, 2019 at 2.43 p.m. IST by a Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV). According to the ISRO, the mission consisted of an orbiter, lander and rover. The orbiter will perform mapping from an altitude of 100 k.m, while the lander will make soft landing on the surface of the moon and send out a rover which will perform to gather information and images of various parts of the moon.
The craft reached the moon’s orbit on 20th August, 2019. Vikram lander and the rover were scheduled to land on the near side of the moon, in the South polar region. However the lander deviated from its intended trajectory starting at 2.1 kilometres altitude and had lost communication when touch down confirmation was expected.
Initial reports suggesting a crash were confirmed by ISRO Chairman K. Sivan. In his speech he said it must have been a hard landing. The Prime Minister of India appreciated the ISRO in its effort and said that the mission had given a high esteem to the crown of ISRO.
