Biography of Narayan Debnath
Early life of Narayan Debnath:
Narayan Debnath, a star of Bengali comics was born on 25th November, 1925 in Howrah, West Bengal. In his early life, he involved himself in his family business of ornaments design. After completing his school education, he got admission in the Art College.
Career of Narayan Debnath:
Narayan Debnath started his career as an illustrator in an advertising company. But Narayan Debnath started as a comic writer before comics began to be taken seriously as an art form. Narayan Debnath, known for his works in “Handa Bhonda” (1962), “Bantul The Great” (1965), and “Nonte Phonte” (1969), has remained unseparable in Bengali art and literature for more than six decades.
He holds the record for the longest running comics series, ‘Handa Bhonda’ by an individual. He is the only Indian cartoonist to have received a D. Lit. degree. He also created full length graphic novels on Rabindranath Tagore and Swami Vivekanand. He created another popular detective character, ‘Indrajit Roy’. Narayan Debnath, like all great artists, managed to make the most of his creations timeless.
Awards and Honours Received By Narayan Debnath:
He received the Sahitya Academy Award and the Banga Bibhushan in 2013. The Government of India honoured him with the prestigious Padma Shree in 2021.Death:The cartoonist, illustrator and the creator of some immortal characters for children’s world, Narayan Debnath passed away on 18th January, 2022 after suffering from a prolonged illness. But his works will have been etched in our hearts forever.
