Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology Admission Courses Careers
The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) is a scientific institution based in Pune, Maharashtra, India for expanding research in tropical Indian Ocean of the tropics in general with special reference to monsoon meteorology, and air-sea interaction of South Asian climate. It is an Autonomous Institute of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India.
History of Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology:
In the 1950’s, after the great Independence of India, when the country was focusing on the post independence economic development, then it was felt the importance to study the fundamental atmospheric problems and to realize the mechanism of the monsoon, weather updates, and climatic changes in the tropical region, particularly over the monsoon region, considering its effect on social and economical fields.Â
In pursuance to fulfill this urgent, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) proposed to establish tropical nations center for meteorological research and training in its Third Congress
The Government of India officially approved the proposal in February 1962 as one of the schemes under its Third Five Year Plan. Finally, on 17th November, 1962, Pune (then Poona), the Institute of Tropical Meteorology (ITM) was established and became a part of the India Meteorological Department (IMD). On April1, 1971, the Institute was renamed the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) and became an independent entity on the advice of the Committee for entity of Scientific Research (COSR).
Controlling Power of Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology:
In its initial stage, the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation took charge the IITM along with the IMD. However, in 1985, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology came under the Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the Ministry of Science & Technology. But since July 12, 2006, the IITM has been successfully monitored by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES).
Careers in the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology:
As a leading research institute in India, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology offers various opportunities to make careers in IITM. It provides scientific information in the areas of atmospheric sciences and meteorology that may be very useful to establish career in the field of communications, transportation, economics, agriculture, health and water resources. It serves as a national hub for monsoon meteorology basic and application research.
After completing courses in IITM, you can apply for the post of IITM project Manager, IITM Research Fellow, IITM Research Associate and its different missions.

Achievements of Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology:
Since its glorious establishment, the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology added many worthy success to its crown. It is very significant to inform that Adithya HPC, one of the largest computational capacities of India, is located at IITM.
Pratyush, the fastest supercomputer of India is developed and designed by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology.
The IITM has the high performance computing facility dedicated to weather and climate research, only after Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
Besides, many worth remembering products and projects have been launched by the Indian Institute of tropical Meteorology. SAFAR-India is among of them. SAFAR (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research) helps to take strategies of air pollution mitigation go along with nation’s economic development to target a win-win scenario.Â
