The Hague, 23rd June: It seemed the vital moment of two and half minutes which was allotted to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee to speak about her dream project of Kanyashree in the auditorium at the World Forum, The Hague before 1200 representatives from different countries. Kanyashree Prakalpa, Mamata Banerjee’s brainchild to prevent the marriage of underage girls specially from weaker sections received the global recognition when Kanyashree Prakalpa was adjudged as the first rank for its innovative public service.
The Kanyashree Prakalpa was ranked first in its category among the 552 nominations from 62 countries. After receiving the award, the honourable Mamata Banerjee said, “I dedicate this award to all the 40 lakh young girls of Bengal who are benefited with this scheme.” “This is a big achievement…… Isn’t it?” She asked with a smile while carrying a trophy and a certificate that Thomas Gass, the assistant secretary-general for public coordinator had handed over to her.
The Kanyashree Scheme was launched in 2013 and it has benefited around 40 lakh young girls in the past few years. The scheme is for the school going girls in the age group of 13 to 18 years. They are benefited with Rs 1000 a year to carry on with their education. A one-time grant of Rs 25000 is given to each beneficiary after she turns 18 years and continues her studies without getting married.
Several socialists and organisations have welcomed the scheme for its usefulness in preventing the early marriage of girls. At the end of the programme, Gass appreciated the success of the scheme in his speech. The Kanyashree Prakalpa was hailed by one and all.
