“Paragraph on Well-known Quotations”
  1) “Sweet are the uses of adversity”
The statement used in Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” contains a profound truth. Adversity means difficulty or trouble. An adverse situation is not desired for one to do one’s works smoothly. It is considered to be a curse. It is no doubt that no one desires adverse situations that prevent him from fulfilling desires.
Inspite of inconveniences, the uses of adversity may be made sweet if we accept it as a challenge and face it courageously. Then adversity can prove highly beneficial to mankind. Prosperity may not judge our true character. But adversity can develop our mental faculties like – courage, patience, perseverance, intellect, power of will, temperance. Having once been through adverse situations, one is certain to face the obstacles in life with ease.
Adversity also develops a moral character in human beings. He who has never suffered can never understand the suffering of others and will never support other at the time of suffering. The value of tears can be appreciated only by a man who has shed tears himself. Adversity purifies a man. Gold comes out as very precious after melting and purified in fire. History is replete with examples of great men who rose in eminence after facing strong adversity.
Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar, Dr Meghnad Saha, Thomas Alva Edison, Michael Faraday had to struggle against poverty and many other opposition forces. Their spirit never went down. They became great in their respective fields. According to Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, adversity always presents introspection to analyse the situation and oneself.
Besides, adversity enhances the pleasures of prosperity. Adversity can be really useful to man provided he has a positive attitude towards life.
   2) “Time and tide wait for none”
Shakespeare in his play Julius Caesar says,
” There is a tide in the affairs of men
Which taken at the flood leads on to fortune”
Surely enough man’s life is always destined with the changing course of life. Human life is characterized by the ups and downs. The tide of good times and fortunes waits for none. It is we who must utilize the moment very carefully. We should always keep a constant watch on the moments when the tide turns in our favour.
Then we must plunge into the moment of utilisation. Once we have grabbed this opportunity and sailed the ship of life, we are sure of a smooth sailing. Time, old gipsy stops nowhere. Its unseen feet have no exhaustion and need no rest.
So if the time recedes while we are passing moment in idle way, then we are bound to be stuck for ever in shallow water of unfruitfulness. No mercy or remorse can then uplift us from the world of failure. Infact, the time of fruitfulness pass away like a twinkle. Both time and tide speed away silently and continuously if we pass our time in dream of idle hour. So instead of repenting later, we should utilize our present time very fruitfully.
Time is a cruel master. It will not spare even a moment. The creative and formative years of youth if once allowed to slip unutilised, will never return. A time lost is lost for ever. Time is not money. It is worth more than money.
Lost health or wealth can be recovered. But time, once lost, is lost for ever. We should seize the time as it approaches, utilise it to the best of our capabilities. Hence the judicious use of time is essential to get success in life and honour in life.
  3) “The child is the father of man”
Though the statement appears to self-contradictory, it contains a profound truth. Milton also once said, “The child shows the man as the morning shows the day.” As the nature of the day may be anticipated from the condition of the morning, similarly the childhood is the stage of what one is going to be when one attains maturity.
The natural instincts of a man may be determined in his childhood. The future of a child may be guessed by his childhood conduct. The child seems to represent what he will be as a man in the future to come. Time nourishes the qualities of a child, ripens them. These qualities flourish in completeness as he attains maturity.
History contains numerous examples of greatmen who gave clear indications of their future when they were just small children. No knows what fate has kept in store for the child. Yet, the conduct of today may have a bearing on the character of tomorrow. Childhood truly reveals the nature of the manhood that will come in future.
The childhood of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was shaped and motivated by great thoughts of his father. He was lost in the world of knowledge from his childhood. And he grew up to be the greatest scientist India has ever produced. A child’s mind is very flexible. The mould he receives before his clay is hardened becomes his permanent mark. The values and standards of behaviour which will determine his life as a man are all developed in the childhood.
Exceptions are, ofcourse, there. A day beginning with a bright morning might end in a storm. But these exceptions are very rare. One’s essential personality always remains what it promises to be in one’s childhood.Â
 4) Man is the architect of his own fate
Life is never all plain sailing and success. Determination, dutifulness and devotion are much needed to win the laurels of life. Indeed, man’s fortune is not sent. It is made by his own act and conduct. Many have born with talent but only execution of talent bring the success of life.
Man is truly the architect of his own fate. He is the only sailor in the vastness of his life. His destiny is implied in his own action and dedication. Life is not only the bed of roses but it is a stiff, rough course. Man has to execute his emotion into action. The man who fights well in the battle of life wins the crown of glory.
But who hesitates and fails to act badly suffers and ruins his future. A man of courage and thought is certain to succeed. But an idle man fails miserably. He is to blame none but to his own weakness for his failure.
After all, fortune ever favours the brave and deserts the inactive, coward people. The success of a man is the result of his own sincerity and devotion. He is the true architect of his own fate.
