The Wolf And The House Dog
On a moonlit night, a lean and hungry wolf was slowly walking in search of food. On the way, he met with a plump and well-fed house dog. The wolf said to the dog, “How is it cousin dog, that you look so sleek and contented? I can hardly find enough food to keep me from starvation. You seem to live very comfortably, my dear friend.”
In reply, the dog said, “I lead a very easy and comfortable life. My master always cares me and gives me enough food and rest. In return, only I have to guard my master’s house every night.” Then the wolf felt the dog was a fortunate one. He sighed and said, “My friend, you are so lucky, I do not find sufficient food always at hand in the forest.”
The dog felt great sorrow for the helpless condition of the wolf and said, “Well, come along with me. I shall secure for you plenty of food and similar job like mine.” The wolf agreed with the dog and followed him.
On the way, the wolf spied a mark around the dog’s neck. He questioned the dog about it. The dog replied, “It’s nothing but the mark of the chain with which I am fastened daily by my master in the day time.”
The wolf did not follow the house-dog any more and said, “Oh! Good-bye to you, my friend. I do not want to lose my freedom and keep me in the bondage for good food and rest.” Saying this, the wolf returned to his wood-land life.
