The coolest and coldest season of the year is winter. It begins from the end of November and lasts and lingers till the end of the month of February. A very dry and cold weather prevails everywhere in the country in winter. A cool wind often blows from the North. In hilly areas there is snow-fall almost regularly. The sun often shines brightly in the blue and clear sky, and basking in this glorious sunshine is a very common sight now. we experience a bitter and biting cold.
The poor people really have a tough time due to lack of warm clothes. But the winter has also its advantages. It is the harvesting time. In fact, winter is the season of various fairs and flowers, functions and festivals.

Winter is the fifth season of Bengal. It generally begins from the middle of December and persists till the middle of February. It is the season of cold wind, snow and fog. Nature looks very dull in this season. The sky remains cloudless. Morning and evening sometimes experience fog and mist. The seasonal flowers bloom bountifully in this season. It is a season comparatively free of diseases. Fruits like oranges, apples, grapes and vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, tomato etc grow abundantly in this season.
It is not at all a pleasant season to the poor who do not have warm clothes. However, winter has its charms. It is a season of festivity. The festivals like – the Nabanna, the Saraswati Puja, the Christmas etc are held in this season. Picnic, cultural functions, book-fairs, flower-shows, sports, games etc are also held in this season. It is also the season of tour and travel. People in general enjoy the season very much.

In the cycle of six seasons, evry season comes and goes with its own beauty and characteristics. The six seasons are – summer, monsoon, autumn, late autumn, winter and spring. Of all these seasons, winter comes before spring. It is the fifth season of Bengal. The season lasts from late November to early February. Cold wind and thick mist fill the days. Biting cold north wind, fog, snowfall are the main features of this season.
The temperature often falls far below the normal. The morning sun generally remains hidden in the heavy fog in this season. The atmosphere during winter is very pleasant as there is neither rain nor scorching heat. The fields remain covered with blanket of mists. Dewdrops twinkle on the grasses in the morning.
Many kinds of flowers like marigold, sunflower, dahlia, zinnia bloom in this season. Many fairs and picnics are held in this time. Various vegetables like beans, tomatoes, cabbages, cauliflowers etc are available in abundance. We go for outings and tours in this season. The sun-rays are pleasant and we bask in the sun happily. But this season is bad for poor people. They do not have warm cloth to protect themselves from biting cold. Apart from this, winter is the best season.
