Sub: Bad Effects of Plastic Bags
Sir,
Through the column of your esteemed daily, I would like to ventilate my deep concern about the ill-effects caused by plastic bags which are non-biodegradable and extremely hazardous to environment.
Plastic bags are the major constituents of the filth and garbage in our society; though there are certain advantages of using plastic bags. Firstly, the plastic bags are durable. Secondly, these bags are lighter in weight and on account of extensive use, these bags are available at a cheap rate.
But there are many damaging effects of the use of polythene bags. They are not nature-friendly, not being absorbed in the soil. If thrown away into drains they choke them. Studies have shown that fields strewn with plastic bags lose their fertile quality. These polythene bags increase the toxicity of soil and water. Thus, plastic is a great nuisance and a grave hazard to public health as it causes respiratory and skin diseases.Â
There are always better alternatives in the form of paper and jute bags which are always beneficial to mankind and eco-system. The government did impose a ban on the use of plastic bags but still the polythene bags have flooded the market and nobody cares about the risks associated with it.
So, I earnestly request you to take your mighty pen to draw the attention of the concerned people to take positive steps to limit the use of plastic bags to reduce environment pollution.Â
Yours Truly,
Subrata Sen
