What is Equity Research?

Equity’ refers to the value of the shares issued by a company and ‘equities’ mean the value of stocks and shares that carry no fixed interest. However, the meaning of ‘equity’ as related to finance, is ownership of any of your asset such as a immovable property, a motor vehicle, etc. with no outstanding debt on these items will be called your equity and you will be at liberty to sell these. Basic requirement is interest in research and critical analysis. Another important skill for an equity research analyst is data manipulation and management. To be successful equity research analyst you need to be detail oriented. You should have a good understanding of financial and economic concepts, good arithmetic skills and will to work very hard. Confidence, good communication skills and creativity are also important.

What is Expected Income as Equity Research Analyst?

Remuneration depends on the firm where you are employed, your qualifications and merit. International firms pay more than the domestic brokerage houses. The salary of an equity research analyst range from 8 to 15 lakhs p.a. in international firms. In India, salary an equity research analyst in financial services is approx. between Rs. 4 to 12 lakhs p.a., in Investment banking/fund approx. between Rs. 4 to 10 lakhs, in equity financing approx. between Rs. 4 to 12 lakhs p.a., in asset management it is approx. 5 lakhs to 14 lakhs p.a.

What Type of Education Needed in Equity Research Analyst?

After completing your schooling i.e. 10+2, you can go for post-secondary training and also work in the market and gain related work experience. While working in this field you can learn about research skills and the job interview process. Some institutes offer basic and Advance level courses in Equity research.

Your experience could be as a statistician, accounts officer, finance officer, or as financial analyst. You need a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, accounting, statistics, business management, etc. before you work as an equity research analyst. You can pursue post-graduation in business management, finance or statistics to seek a supervisory management level position in this field.
